Godzilla has been terrorizing Tokyo and other parts of the world for over fifty years. During that time, there have been countless plastic toys depicting the green lizard in many different ways. Most of the toy monsters are based on the Japanese version of Godzilla, which I am partial to, but the American dinosaur also has a following.

godzilla toys action figureget best priceThe 1990′s Godzilla that featured the very fast moving streamlined version comes in an action figure that is almost a foot tall and 19 inches long. In some ways he appears more scary that the big bellied lizard that has been around since the 1950′s. His face is more evil and menacing, whereas the old Godzilla could actually look cuddly at times.

This large version comes with great detail and is true to the movie villain. He has two soldiers he attacks and eats. You have to remove them (yuck) afterwards. If you are interested in this toy, it might be difficult to find because production was limited on it.

The other Godzilla spawned countless other supportive toys from the many movies where he became somewhat of the good guy as he battled adversaries from everywhere else. Bandai makes many of the related toys. My personal favorite is a 2005 model that is 6 inches tall. It looks so much like the traditional monster that you can visualize him stomping down tall buildings. He is flexible so you can pose him by moving legs and arms, or are they all legs?

There is also a 6.5-inch Godzilla that is more in the attack mode that you might like. His arms are spread further apart than the other version and he leans forward. Either of these two is good if you are working on a collection.

The Bandai version is 7 inches tall, which works well with either of their true Godzilla toys when you are doing battle. You would probably want to have Mecha King Ghidorah as another foe to your champion. In case you don’t remember, he has three heads and is larger than Godzilla. There are two versions of this beauty. I prefer the silver and gold to the one that is only gold colored.

Nonetheless, he does have a place in my collection, and I’m sure that some people actually like him. There are at least two variations of this character, and one is a little more realistic than the other one. Make sure you see all your choices before you invest in one.

Another character that is dear to the tradition of Japanese monsters is Jet Jaguar, represented faithfully in his multicolored and chrome attire with deep square eye sockets. You almost expect him to blast off at any minute. His size is complimentary to all the other toys we have mentioned.godzilla toys jet jaguar

Another of my favorites was Rodan the bat/bird/dragon creature that dates back to 1956. There are two different versions of this tornado-causing fellow. One has him standing erect with his wings spread out, which just doesn’t look right. The other has him in a crouch with the wings flared back as though he is ready for flight. Neither of these poses seems to fit, in my opinion, but the second one is the more believable of the two.

Speaking of wind and fury, does anyone remember Mothra? Two tiny little twins would sing and bring the moth on steroids to do battle against whatever villain needed to be vanquished. There are two versions of this Japanese favorite, but I have no preference for one or the other.

Anghirus – A creature with a shell like back that has spines protruding from it. This one stays on all fours most of the time. The toy is about 11 inches long and is a good likeness of the movie character.

Destroyer – Based on the same body structure as Godzilla, he’s just uglier and has winged arms.

Hedra the smog monster – Looks like a glob of melting goo with red and yellow eyes. This one doesn’t do much except look creepy.
